AXA team up with The Hills
Luke Clinton and his employers AXA have put in place a great scheme where members, supporters and their families can help raise funds for the club in 2012. All that needs to happen is for 50 people to take out a new Home or Motor Isurance policy with AXA and they will donate €1,000.00 to the club. It's that simple! The policies must be purchased before the end of 2012.
All you need to do is drop into your local AXA branch and mention Teamwork, tell them which club you are supporting or alternatively you can call their number on 1890 247 365. Any questions you can call Luke on 086 806 9187.

Save a Life in 2012!
The Club recently acquired a defibrillator which is a small device used to deliver CPR to anyone suffering from cardiac arrest, restoring normal heart function and thereby increasing their chances of survival greatly. The device itself is easy to use and requires no prior medical knowledge, it even has software that prevents the device being used on a healthy heart.
We are now looking for volunteers to be trained on the use of the device and we will be running a brief training session in February. Please let Michael Dwyer know on 086 101 6737 if you are willing to participate.
You could be a life saver in 2012! |

Kevin O'Herlihy RIP
Sadly we learned earlier today of the passing of Kevin O'Herlihy yesterday in Thailand. The Hills CC wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Kevin. Two of his sons, Ian and Michael, represented our club with great distinction, and Kevin was always keenly interested in the playing performances of the teams of the Hills CC. His strong commitment to cricket in Fingal was shown by the fact that he coached at Balbriggan CC, one of his sons, Kevin Jnr played for Balbriggan and for many years Kevin Snr served as Balbriggan CC’s representative on the LCU Youth Committee.

Jack Pender & Mark Donegan were the top scorers with 20 & 14 runs respectively.
The Under 13 boys also beat Malahide recently in another thriller. Malahide batted first and made 99 runs. Robbie Clinton took 2 wickets for 20 runs and Ultan Doherty took 2 wickets for 15 runs. In reply The Hills reached 99 runs in 19 overs requiring just one run off the last over for victory. Niall Daly again scored the winning run on the last ball of the 20th over. Ultan Doherty retired with 37 runs and Arran Roy scored a quick fire 21 runs that included 2 fours and 2 sixes.
Well done to the Under 13's for a great season and looking at some of the skills coming through we will have lots of cricket talent to call upon in the years ahead. |

First X1 win local Derby Vs North County
Yesterday at the Vineyard the First X1 were up against league leaders North County in an important match that could impact league standings for both sides at the end of the season.
Despite missing the services of Irish International John Mooney, North County fielded a strong side with names such as Shane Getkate, Adam Coughlan and Josh Reeves. Despite the forecast weather conditions were good for the game with only a 10 minute stoppage for a brief rain spell.
The Hills won the toss and decided to bat first. Manu Kumar went early with the score on 29 but Daryl Calder(42) and Mike Baumgart(75) brought the score to a very decent 139 before the fall of the next wicket. Max Sorensen joined Mike at the crease and pushed the score to 191 before Max was caught off the bowling of Terry Richardson. With only about 8 overs to go it was time to get the hitting bats out and with lots of wickets to spare caution was thrown to the easterly winds but not before Tomas Murphy(25), Yogisk Kashyap(13) and Howard Mc Donnell(7) brought the score to 249 for 9 off the 50 overs. Extras helped our cause greatly accounting for 42 in total (27 wides)! Terry Richardson with 3 for 41 off 10 and Josh Reeves with 3 for 52 off 10 were the pick of the North County bowlers but a tidy 10 overs for just 31 from Ritchie Lawrence helped curtail The Hills total.
In reply North County started well with the score on 49 before the loss of the first wicket Lawrence, run out Tomas Murphy. This seemed to spur on The Hills attack and had four of the North County batsmen gone with just 78 on the board. But North County bounced back with two fine innings from Reeves and Hay with 47 and 71 respectively bringing the total to 161 before the fall of the next wicket, Reeves. Plenty of good batsmen to come but The Hills kept the pressure on the run rate for North County and despite the best efforts of Richardson(16), Nolan(13) and Mc Loughlin(10) they came 23 runs shy of the target in the 50th over. Best bowling for The Hills were Mark Dwyer with 2 for 27 off 10, Max Sorensen with 2 for 47 off 10 and tight spells from Yogish, Luke and Naseer all contributing to a great team performance. Turning point in the innings was probably a well taken catch on the boundary by Howard Mc Donnell to dismiss Reeves off the bowling of Kumar when he and Hay looked particularly comfortable.

First X1 overcome Clontarf to keep League title hopes alive
The First X1 did well away to Clontarf yesterday and as a result can continue to look positively at achieving League honors now that they are sitting second in the table.
The Hills batted first and got off to a solid start with Malcolm Byrne (28) and Daryl Calder (36) with the first wicket falling at 62. Naseer Shoukat put on an undefeated 58 off 50 balls supported by Mark Dwyer(27) and Manu Kumar(21). We were helped along the way with some very wayward bowling accounting for 40 wides in our innings! Our innings ended in the 50th over with our tally standing at 238 for 9.
Clontarf got off to a solid start with Coughlan(51) Morrissey(19) and Hokin(43). It was the introduction of Mark Dwyer to the attack that changed the game completely in the direction of The Hills. Mark claimed an amazing 8 Clontarf wickets for 49 off 9 overs including well seasoned performers such as Hokin, Poynter, D'Arcy, Delaney and Forrest.
Clontarf ended their innings 21 runs short in the 48th over.

The Hills set off well ahead of the required rate with a solid opening partnership between Rhiannon Pope and Hannah Corcoran with the first wicket falling after 42 runs. Rhiannon was retired on 26 after exceeding the retirement score of 24 runs. Excellent accurate bowling by The YMCA girls pegged back the Hills Girls and eventually it came down to Veronica Fay-Watt and Katie Boylan having to score 6 runs between them off the last two overs. The final winning single was scored with only 2 balls remaining in the match.
Rhiannon Pope was awarded the player of the match award and was presented with The Clarissa Pilkington Cup by Donal O'Sullivan to become the first Hills Captain to lift a Leinster Youths Cup since Malcolm Byrne did so for The Hills under 15 boys back in 1997

Fourth X1 Progress in Intermediate Cup
A very steady 97 not out from Jason Magee set up our Fourth X1 for a good win in glorious sunshine on Saturday in their Intermediate Cup First Round game against Sandyford. The Hills set a target of 179 for 6 off their 40 overs. Johnny Archer was the best of the supporting batsmen with 21, retired injured.
After the interval The Hills attack got into full swing and wickets began to fall freely after initial resistance from the openers Langton and O'Brien. The game was still in the balance with a fine stand (31) by their number 10 batsman J. Loftus who resisted the temptations to go the way of his colleagues before being bowled by D'Arcy in the 35th over with the Sandyford score on 117.
There was some fine bowling performances for The Hills including: Jim Briscoe with 3 for 26 off 8, Dean Robinson 3 for 26 off 8, Martin Byrne 2 for 6 off 3, Pierce D'arcy with 1 for 5 off 2 and Ultan Doherty with 1 for 6 off 4. The Hills win by 58 runs and proceed to the 2nd round against Wicklow County on Sunday June 26th away in Rathdrum.

Hills players feature in early season stat's
Despite the windy and unpredictable conditions of May 2011 there have been some very notewothy personal performances that should give us all cheer and encourage us to fight on for the rest of the season.
On the bowling front Malcolm Byrne has the most wickets in Leinster with a total of 12 wickets from 4 matches including the best individual match stat's of 7 for 16.
On the fielding front Howard Mc Donnell leads the charge with 4 catches in the field from four matches followed closely by Max Sorensen with 4 from 3 and Malcolm Byrne again featuring with 3 from 4 games.
Daryl Calder is featuring prominently with the Wicket Keeping Gloves taking a total of 6 scalps in just 3 outings behind the stumps. (4 catches and 2 stumpings).
On a seperate note we would like to congratulate Dara Armstrong (North County) for his record breaking run of 509 dismissals behind the stumps surpassing the previously held Leinster record of 508 held by Charlie Kavanagh.
Based on the above it sounds like all we need to do is get the willow working a little better and we can look forward to a great season.

Max Sorensen picked for Southern Selection
Cricket Ireland announced the squads for next Sunday's Inter Regional game, which will be played at Bready in the NW starting at 11am.
The North squad includes six full internationals, and five players with Ireland A experience. The only newcomer to the representative set-up is the New Zealand born all-rounder Ben McCord, who plays for CIYMS in the NCU.
The side is captained by the experienced Andrew White, who has no fewer than 189 caps to his name.
Trent Johnston leads the Southern squad, which like the Northern squad also contains six full internationals. Former Ireland Under 19 international Ben Ackland is rewarded for his prolific early season form with Cambridge University, while Ireland A internationals Conor Mullen and Eddie Richardson are also included.
There are three new faces in their 12, with Merrion's Bob Kerr Irish Senior Cup winning captain John Anderson being included, along with Tom Fisher of Railway Union and The Hills opening bowler Max Sorensen.
Players who weren't available included Kevin O'Brien, as he is about to sign a deal with an English county, while both Andrew Balbirnie and Graeme McCarter have exam commitments. George Dockrell also wasn't considered, although he is close to full fitness following his dislocated shoulder sustained during the World Cup.
Ireland coach Phil Simmons said: "This is a great opportunity for players to stake their claim in the international squad. There are two ODI's coming up against Pakistan at the end of the month and there are places up for grabs. I'm pleased with the composition of both squads and it shows that we are now starting to get a bit of depth in Irish cricket."
The North squad is as follows:
Andrew White (Capt) (Instonians), Peter Connell (CIYMS) Chris Dougherty (Brigade), Phil Eaglestone (Strabane), Nigel Jones (CSN), Rory McCann (Instonians), Ben McCord (CIYMS), Niall McDonnell (Strabane) James Shannon (Instonians), Paul Stirling (Carrickfergus/Middlesex), Stuart Thompson (Limavady) Craig Young (Bready/Sussex).

Cricket Academy Evening
John Wills and John Pope are putting together an information evening on Wednesday next the 16th at 8 pm to launch the new coaching structure for the club. For those that are not already aware of the developments, John Wills is putting in place a completely new coaching structure for the club which will cater for all teams including adults and youths. This new structriure will enable us to ensure that all players will be given the most appropriate coaching assistance for their abilities and talents as distint from the needs of their team.
We are now recruiting volunteers who have an interest in helping with the continued development of cricket in the club and in particular having parents of our youths section supporting this initiative.
You do not need any previous coaching knowledge or even cricket experience to participate in this development. Why not come along on Wednesday and see what is planned. |

A short poem to remind us of Sean Gilbride
Joe clinton composed this brief note to commerorate our departed friend and stalwart of the club:
Sean
We planted him Tues 4 January, 2011,
Not near Ben Bulben but at Ardla,
The winds were harsh, countless huddled.
Well I knew the teacher
I asked the questions
He answered ten thousand times.
We watched him fade away.
He's in a flower-clad grave now, our hero
And we'll miss him.

Sean Gilbride RIP
The death of Sean Gilbride on January 1st 2011 has deprived the Fingal area of a very loyal advocate and in particular the Hills Cricket Club of one of its most devoted and committed members. Sean, a son of Eugene Gilbride TD, was a native of Grange in Co. Sligo, but lived in Skerries from 1972. A teacher by profession, he taught in Balbriggan Community College and became Principal in 1999 when he succeeded Pat Casey.
Sean’s initial involvement in cricket was of an indirect nature through his professional role at Balbriggan Community College where he had taught many distinguished cricketers from the greater Fingal area. In 1991 however he was invited by the Hills CC to provide advice on their plans for their new clubhouse and from that time onwards, Sean involved himself enthusiastically in every facet of the cricket club. He officiated at the opening of the new Clubhouse at the Hills CC in 1995, and he served with great distinction as President of the club from 1996 to 2000.
Whether it was in assisting with work on the ground or the clubhouse, supporting fund-raising events, providing transport for youth teams or attending games, he was a person on whom you could rely with absolute certainty. He was always available to provide support or encouragement when required, and he was particularly generous in word and deed when acknowledging meritorious individual and collective achievements at the club.
Sean was an absolute gentleman who loved the Hills CC and was loved by all at the Hills. He enjoyed the camaraderie, the banter, the story-telling, song-singing, and all the other activities which make up the rich social tapestry of the Hills. After he retired as Principal of Balbriggan Community College in 2003, amongst many other tasks, he was placed in charge of the heavy roller at the Vineyard and he fulfilled all of the duties attached to this onerous position with dedication and good humour.
He faced his final illness with the courage and dignity which were characteristic of the manner in which he had faced challenges throughout his life. He retained his cheerful disposition, and was more concerned for those around him than he was for himself.
Sean's remains will be removed from his home to St Patrick's Church in Skerries on Tuesday 4th of January for a funeral mass at 12 noon and afterwards for burial at Ardla cemetary.
To his wife, Mary, his sons, his extended family and friends, we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences. Ní bheidh a leithéid aris ann. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis. |

5 Wicket Haul for Albert van der Merwe
Playing in the second ODI of their series against Canada in Toronto Alberts 5 wicket haul was somewhat overshadowed by a brilliant innings of 177 by Paul Sterling which set Ireland up for victory to even the ODI series one all. Support with the bat for Sterling provided by Andrew Poynter (30), Andre Botha (28), Nigel Jones (25), and John Mooney (25). Irelands final tally of 325 was the highest score for Ireland in an ODI game.
Alberts final figures were 5 wickets for 49 off 10 and he is only the third Irish bowler to take 5 wickets in an ODI game. Trent Johnston and Alex Cusack being the others who have passed that milestoone. Canada reached 233 all out leaving them 92 runs short of the target. |

Weekly Round Up September 7th
The weather took its toll on the fixtures at the weekend with the Third X1 and the Fifth X1 games being washed out due to poor conditions.
On a more cheery note the Ladies First X1 were confirmed as winners of the Leinster League and in the process gaining promotion to Division 1 for the 2011 season. Having previously won the Leinster Junior Cup the Ladies First X1 have finished off a terrific season in 2010. Well done and congratulations.
Coming up this weekend the Third X1 take on Bagenalstown on Saturday at home while on Sunday the First X1 travel to Railway Union and the Second X1 take on Cork County at home. At time of writing, it is still unclear what will happen to the previously fixed Fifth X1 game against Merrion, more details when available.
On the social side of things we have a great night in store on Saturday with Martin Byrne and Morning Dew teaming up to entertain us in the club house. This event coincides with the Killalane Road Races. With our Road Racing friends in tow it should be a great night of Craic agus Ceol. No cover charge! NB Roads close 1pm - 7pm Saturday 11th and 10am - 6:30pm on Sunday 12th
Finally two key dates for your diary: Our AGM will take place on Tuesday 19th October and our Annual Awards Dinner will take place on Friday October 29th.

Weekly Round Up August 30th
Not a great Saturday in terms of victories on the cricket front from last weekend. The First X1 were on the wrong side of a nail biter against YMCA on Saturday, an under strength Ladies First X1 were defeated in North Kildare and the Third X1 were defeated at home by Civil Service. Sunday saw the Third X1 save the weekend for us when they were in action away against Merrion and put on 156 for 7 and put Merrion out for 148.
On Saturday against YMCA The Hills were asked to bat first and despite loosing Mark Dwyer early Mike Baumgart (38) and Daryl Calder (30) saw off the opening bowling attack and on 94 for three we looked in reasonably good shape to put on a decent score. Jeremy (22) and Max (14) at the crease looked comfortable but then Jeremy was run out on a quick single, on the very next ball Max skied one off Parkinson to square leg. 130 for 5 and that big score looked decidedly less likely. Joseph Clinton put on a dogged 17 but with the exception of Malcolm Byrne (10) the remaining batsmen didn't challenge the scorers too much. We finished on 176 all out off 47.1 overs with extras contributing a fine 33 in our total. James Parkinson for YM finished with 4 for 29 off his 10 overs.
YMCA started well and their opener James Shortt (60) gave them a very solid platform. In fairness to the men from The Hills they never gave up on the attack and with 6 of YM gone for 145 there was still a glimmer of hope. In the end it went down to YM only needing a single off the last over which they got off the second ball. YM finished on 177 for 8 off 49.2 overs. Mark Dwyer took 4 for 28 off his 10 overs but much credit must also go to some fine bowling by Max, Jeremy and Joseph Clinton. In the end had we batted the extra 2.5 overs we may have had enough on the scoreboard!
Despite their loss to North Kildare at the weekend the Ladies First X1 can still secure the Leinster League title if they see off Malahide tomorrow evening at the Vineyard. Game starts at 5:30. |

23.8.10 |
Weekly Round Up August 23 rd
It was a mixed weekend for the players and teams here at The Hills over the weekend. The Fifth's were playing in the Minor Cup Final in Rush against Rush on Saturday and the First X1 had two important games against Merrion on Saturday and against our old foe Clontarf on Sunday. To keep League title hopes alive we probably needed a good result from both these games.
On Saturday Merrion batted first and things went The Hills way in the early stages when it looked like Merrion wouldn't make the century mark when we had 7 of their batsmen out for 94 runs. But with Kade Beasley (50) still at the crease the Merrion tail enders brought the total to a very respectable 162 before closing their innings with wides (22) being the second top scorer! Luke Clinton ended with 3 for 33, Max Sorensen 2 for 30 and Malcolm Byrne 2 for 23, Daryl Calder took 3 wickets behind the stumps and 6 other catches were taken in the field 2 for Max and one apiece for Tomás Murphy, Malcolm Byrne, Mark Dwyer and Albert van der Merwe. Despite missing Jeremy Bray and Naseer Shoukat, both in sick bay, it still felt like an achievable challenge even though we were up against the Irish Senior Cup contenders. The Hills innings started well with Albert and Daryl opening the reply, Daryl fell with the score on 59 but we lost 4 more wickets before reaching 102 so it was still all to play for as we chased the remaining 60 required. Joseph Clinton and Max Sorensen* with 26 and 34 respectively brought the score within reach and we eventually ended the chase with 168 for 6 wickets in the 47 th over. Albert van der Merwe ended with a 54 to add to his tally for the season. John Anderson was the pick of the Merrion attack taking 4 for 21 off his 10 overs.
The smoke signals coming from the coast at Rush were looking very ominous as we read of a very strong and youthful opposition performing feats of athleticism not seen and certainly not performed by many of our Fifth X1 for many years. Some Russians were heard to express concern that The Hills had packed their team with legends for the Cup Final and who would blame them with names like Paddy Byrne, Martin Byrne, Malachy Gavin, Martin Moore, Nick Farrell, Joe Archer all on the team sheet. Experience was also augmented by Alister Mc Mahon, Ian Tolan, Christivan and Juvan Maritz adding the youthful ingredients to the squad. Reverting to more modern communications we learned that The Hills were at the crease first and were struggling to put on runs and were loosing wickets but Nick Farrell, known to be a dangerous man when he" gets the eye in", was leading the fight. Despite his best efforts though The Hills were dismissed for a total of 137 of which Nick made 42, pick of the Rush bowling was B McAllister with 3 for 30. The game was very much in favour of Rush at the break but when Rush man M Byrne 83* took to the task the game was doomed from a Hills perspective. Rush made the target in just 23.3 overs only loosing 3 wickets on the way. Not a great outing then on the day but well done to all the team for getting to the final in the first place, you would have gotten long odds on them being in the final at the outset of the competition.
And so to Sunday at the Vineyard against Clontarf who had only won 3 of their 9 league outings in Leinster this season. Could they make it 4 wins by overturning The Hills chase of League honours? Despite a vast array of talent the Clontarf team came to Milverton today hovering just above the relegation battles at the bottom half of the league table but could the men from The Hills overcome the hex the men from Castle Avenue seem to have on them over the past several encounters? Batting first it looked like an uphill task as the Clontarf openers progressed to 70 without loss in 15 overs. Luke Clinton 2-41 came into the attack and together with Max Sorensen 3-34 they pinned Clontarf back to 90 for 4. Mark Dwyer 2-45 and Albert van der Merwe 1- 24 joined in the attack and kept the pressure on the Clontarf batsmen who eventually concluded their innings on 201 in the 48th over. Stuart Poynter 51 and Adrian D'Arcy 49 not out were the pick of the Clontarf batsmen.
The Hills reply didn't start well standing at 35 for 3 after 9 overs but Mike Baumgart (26) and Max Sorensen (20) steadied proceedings somewhat. Mark Dwyer (31) came into the battle to join Mike but The Hills continued to spill wickets reaching only 127 for 7 in the 31st over. The two Clinton brothers Luke (22) and Joseph (13) kept up the fight but we were running out of wickets and overs. With 5 overs remaining we needed 16 runs with Emmet Branagan and Manu Kumar (23), the last paining, at the crease and incredibly we got to within 3 runs when Manu top edged to the wicketkeeper to close off the chase. Maybe we need that defibrillator after all! Jordan Coughlan finished with figures of 5-36 off 9.1. |

Weekly Round-Up
A Lost Weekend. By Bobby Swarbrigg, AKA The Rope
Despite the presence of the Azores High in the North Atlantic a deep depression had descended on the Milverton area by 18.00 hours on Sunday. Strong men were on the verge of tears at the prospect of facing into seasons end on the tail of two losses, one each for First and Second XI's. To tell the truth tears might be a bit of an exaggeration but at the very least the amber and black beverages were just a little less sweet to the palates of The Hills Tribes. It all started to go awry on Saturday with visit to The Vineyard of Terenure for their Division II fixture against The Hills twos. The home side batted first but failed totally to come to terms with the visitors attack and at 77 for 7 things looked bleak for The Hills, it was left, once again, to Joseph Clinton (58*) and Stephen Archer (35) to apply a veneer of respectability to the score as their side stumbled to a total of 211 for 9 in 50 overs. The contribution of this pair of stalwarts to The Hills II this season has been immense and their spirit should be an inspiration to all. Launders, with numbers of 3 for 44 was the pick of the Terenure bowlers.
Terenures new crest depicts a Grecian helmet and while their batsmen stepped into the gap like the Spartans at Thermopylae, they could not be blamed for the absence a Persian horde to trouble them. It seemed that The Hills were suffering from a surfeit of bowlers, 8 were called upon but no matter how they threw themselves against the defenses they were cast back with ease. Mal Byrne with 2 for 26 was the only bowler to achieve figures of note as Terenure reached their target with 3 wickets to spare in the 43rd over. One can't help but feel, with due respect to Terenure, that The Hills weren't actually defeated in this match so much as they lost it.
Anyway, putting that behind us we set out to enjoy the Division I match against Leinster on Sunday knowing that a good result would catapult The Hills to the top of the league, leapfrogging our friends and neighbors in North County. Even without Albert Van der Merwe, away with Ireland, The Hills looked to have the personnel to do the job against a Leinster team which hasn't exactly lit any big fires this season.
Just as in the previous days encounter the home side found themselves batting first and also in the same way only 2 batsmen, Mike Baumgart (71) and Daryl Calder (41), imposed themselves on the opposition bowlers as the Milverton men pushed painfully on to a total of 222 for 9 in 50.
Things started brightly for The Hills as Luke Clinton struck early to send the Leinster openers back whence they came, 22 for 2, however while Anton Scholz remained no one of a Fingalian persuasion was going to relax. The sense of relief was palpable when Max Sorensen had Scholz caught behind by Calder, and it was as good a piece of wicket-keeping as you'd like to see, 33 for 3, now we could begin to enjoy the afternoons entertainment! An afternoon's entertainment was exactly what we witnessed if not the one desired by the majority of the large congregation. JP O'Dwyer (73*) and Carlos Brathwaite (109*) proceeded to treat The Hills bowling with a contempt rarely seen in The Vineyard. As we watched we couldn't help but feel that the manner in which they were taking the aerial route with every second shot that it wouldn't be long before a couple would come to hand but it seemed that all the lucky stars viewed down the years at Observatory Lane were shining down on the Rathmines raiders. As bowler after bowler was repulsed it became clear that what was needed was someone who could take the pace off the ball and when Mark Dwyer was called up that theory was proven correct but the big two were only slowed down by his intrusion and we were now realising that a team with sufficient spinners is, to quote the Master of Woodview, it's like an electrician without a screwdriver. It was further suggested that it's more like an electrician with a faulty phase tester, downright reckless! With 17 overs to spare the Leinster duo had reached the required total and The Hills could only accept a trouncing with good grace and the visiting spectators from Balrothery went home smiling.
The Rope sometimes wonders at the narrowness of the margins in Division I, how easily Leinster might have been looking down from the heights rather than struggling for survival. It speaks volumes for Irish cricket that we can produce quality matches week after week and that our clubs can nurture players to a level where they can present themselves at First Class level and bring our national side to unprecedented heights.
I love this game!
Elsewhere;
The Ladies Second X1 were narrowly defeated by Clontarf's 2nd's on Monday night. Clontarf made 86. Pick of the bowlers were Nicola Flemming 3 for 30, Rhiannon Pope 1 for 15, Lauran Hoey 1 for 11, Emma Dwyer 1 for 3. The Clontarf bowling was extremely tidy with The Hills managing to make 80 in the 20 overs. Run makers for The Hills included: Caroline Clinton 37, Barbara Clinton 10 & Lisa Maguire 14.
The Ladies Second X1 were also in action on Wednesday night where they beat Phoenix. Phoenix batted first making 67. A wicket a piece for Stephanie Woods & Lauran Hoey. The ladies reached the score in just 11 overs for the lost of 2 wickets. Ricka Walser 23 no, Veronica Fay Watson 8 no, Lisa Maguire 10 & Rhiannon Pope 8.
Our Under 13's reached the final of the Gerry Byrne Cup on Friday but came up against a very strong North County side who took the trophy with relative ease having set a massive target of 162 in their 20 overs. Well done to our side in getting to the final and for their spirit and efforts on the night.
On Saturday the Fifth X1 suffered a narrow 5 run defeat to North County but went on to win by 14 runs against Leinster on Sunday |

Weekly Round-Up August 9th
Saturday was a busy day at the club with two teams in cup competitions and lots of league action.
Our Ladies First X1 travelled to Rathmines to take on Pembroke in the Leinster Junior Cup Final. Given the closeness of the previous encounter between the two sides it promised to be a tough challenge. The last time our Ladies captured cup silverware was in 2007 in the Minor Cup but this occasion was another step up for the team to capture the Junior title. Pembroke batted first and The Hills bowling and fielding kept the challengers to a relatively small total of just 69 for 8 from their 20 overs. This was not enough for Pembroke and The Hills ladies ran up the total for the loss of just one wicket in just over 10 overs. Miranda Andrews was named player of the match.
The Second X1 travelled to Rush in the Division 2 league clash. Batting first The Hills put on a reasonably good total of 243 for 8 off the 50 overs with Tomás Murphy (53) and Malcolm Byrne (50) being the pick of The Hills batting efforts. Rush reached the total but not until there was just 13 balls left in their innings and the dismissal of six of their batsmen. Chief contributors for Rush were A. Butterly (80) and S Gull ending with a fine innings of 75 not out.
The Fifth X1 travelled to the lush pastureland of Halverstown in County Kildare to stake their claim for a place in the final of the Minor Cup. Batting first on a damp artificial wicket and very slow outfield conditions The Hills stuttered through the early overs loosing early wickets and with the exception of Nick Farrell(24) making little progress towards a total. It all changed when Ian Tolan and Ali Mc Mahon came to the crease, between them they took the innings by the scruff of the neck and settled into a great partnership of 120. Ian Tolan finished on 54 and Ali Mc Mahon finished on 68. The Hills finished with a total of 178 for 6 off the 40 overs and it looked like a reasonably defendable tally. With improving weather and ground conditions though The Hills still needed a good bowling and fielding performance if they were to prevail. Ian Tolan led the attack taking 3 wickets for 17 runs in an excellent spell. B Mullen 3 for 33 and Martin Byrne 2 for 18 kept the pressure on Halverstown who eventually were all out for 153, 25 short of the mark. The final will be played in Rush on Saturday week the 21st of August. Congratulations to Ian Tolan in breaking the 50 runs marker for the first time.
Also on Saturday the Fourth X1 hosted local rivals Rush at the Vineyard. Batting first The Hills started their innings by loosing two early wickets. Jason Magee and Ian Doherty steadied the ship with two fine innings of 53 and 40 respectively but it came down to Jim Briscoe with an undefeated 39 to bring up a defendable total of 174 with extras contributing an important 25. Rush never really got into the game with some fine bowling by Paul Butler taking 4 wickets for 8 runs allowing The Hills the luxury of using 10 bowlers in total. Other wicket takers were John Derham, Dean Robinson, Jason Magee and Paul Smith. Rush were eventually all out for 109 off 27 overs.
The fourths again took to the field on Sunday to face league contenders Mullingar. The Hills batted first but were dismissed for a modest 73 which Mullingar answered for the loss of just 3 wickets.

Weekly Round-Up August 3rd
Bobby Swarbrigg penned this account of the Second X1 game against Old Belvedere on Saturday.
We took ourselves to the Cabra Oval on Saturday to see if The Hills 2nd XI could do the double over Old Belvedere, and an eventful day it proved to be.
The Hills batted first and with just three overs completed, during which there were in the region of 15 appeals for LBW, umpire McGeehan became concerned about the length, or lack of it, of the wicket, then it rained. By the time the rain stopped a tape measure had been acquired and after due ceremony, measurements were taken, it appeared that the good umpire had been misled by the shadow left on the grass by last week's long wicket. Apologies were issued to the groundsman in his absence and play resumed with The Hills innings reduced to 44 overs.
The Hills batters were kept in check by the Belvo bowlers and, in no small measure, by a tacky sort of wicket which often slowed the arrival of the ball enough to bamboozle even the best, and together with a holding outfield this made it difficult to score freely along the ground. Four wickets had fallen for fewer than 90 runs when Joe Clinton was joined by Steven Archer and these two were to put on forty some runs before departing in quick succession, replaced for the final couple of overs by William Archer and Nadeem Akhtar. The Hills made 146 for 6.
The Old Boys innings wasn't very old when their opener shouldered arms to Joe Clinton and lost his bails, when asked why he replied that he was leaving it for the bounce, "in Cabra?" was the incredulous retort. Further interruptions for rain broke the rhythm of The Hills attack and the momentum which had built up to dismiss 5 of the hosts was in danger of being lost. With 18 overs of the reply completed the rain came again and with 20 overs needed to make a match and with The Hills well ahead by Duckworth Lewis calculations it became imperative that a couple more overs be squeezed in to take the points back to Milverton. The required balls were bowled and with, by now, 7 Belvedere wickets down the overs available to the Cabra side had been further reduced to 34, now they needed 4 an over. This was not an impossible task but if the home side thought they might just squeak a victory they had reckoned without Steven Archer who had been waiting in the long grass to ambush the tail enders and he finished with figures of 5 for 26. Earlier wickets had fallen to Joe Clinton , Mal Byrne, Will Archer (2) and Nadeem, as The Hills 2s won by 43 runs to take their fourth victory of the campaign.
On Sunday the Second X1 took on Pembroke at the Vineyard in overcast conditions with rain eventually reducing the overs and the infamous Duckworth Lewis being called upon to help decide the outcome. The Hills batted first and it was great to see Patrick Byrne make his return to the crease after a prolonged absence due to injury. The pick of The Hills batting was Kumar(49), Patrick Byrne(34), Nadeem Akhtar(17),Mark Dwyer(15) and Tomás Murphy(14). The Hills finished on a total of 187 for 9 off the 50 overs. With the start of the Pembroke innings delayed by rain the revised target was set at 162 to win off 36 overs. With the Pembroke score on 9 Joseph Clinton captured Mc Carthy LBW to take the first scalp. This brought together a fine partnership by Lawson and Moreton with 46 and 63 respectively. Despite these two fine innings Pembroke came up 4 runs short in the end, amazingly with 7 wickets still watching from the clubhouse! Whoever said it was easy on the heart being a Hills supporter, well done to all the lads on the Second X1 for their efforts over the double weekend.
The Bank Holiday Monday saw The Hills host the Middle Cup final with the home Third X1 facing Merrion. Given that Merrion play a league division above our thirds it was going to be a tough call from the outset. Merrion batted first and despite a very early wicket from a superb catch by Jason Magee off the bowling of Darren Byrne they made steady progress through to 79 before the next wicket fell. Watkins and O Tuama with a fine 31 and 40 respectively. But then came the innings that set Merrion on track for a good total with Mc Grath who despite getting injured and needing a runner went on to make 68 before being dismissed by Garry Hynes with the total on 193. Mc Grath was accompanied at the crease by O Keefe who made a fine supporting 50 before being bowled by Clifford Costello but with the total now on 234. The final tally was 238 with the pick of The Hills bowling being Will Archer who took 3 wickets for 37 off 8 overs. To chase that total we needed players to hit some real form and we thought we had when Brendan Moore hit a swashbuckling 63, smashing shots to all parts of the ground. Garry Hynes played a captains innings getting 36 with support from Clifford Costello(19), Jason Magee(17) but it wasn't enough in the end with The Hills coming up 56 runs short of the target. Matt Sheridan, President of The Leinster Cricket Union presented the trophies to the winning Merrion side and in his address he praised the great organisation that The Hills had put into the event from the grounds through to the hospitality and the catering for the day.
Earlier last week the Ladies Second X1 had a good win against Pembroke. Pembroke were all out for 69 runs. 3 wickets a piece for Nicola Flemming & Rebecca Brannigan and a wicket each for Sophie Clinton & Emma Dwyer. The Hills Ladies reached the runs in the 13th over. Nicola Flemming top scored with 26 not out followed by Caroline Clinton with 21.

Jeremy Bray to Captain Ireland A Team
Cricket Ireland this morning announced details of the Ireland A training squad, and their confirmed fixtures for 2010 to date. Recently retired senior international batsman Jeremy Bray has been chosen as captain for the squad, with Senior international coach Phil Simmons keen to utilise his considerable experience with what is primarily a very youthful squad.
Simmons outlined his thoughts on the composition of his squad saying, "I want to keep Jeremy involved even though he's hung up his boots in terms of the senior squad, and he's keen to get involved on the coaching side of things. Adi Birrell will be in charge of the squad for most but not all of the games and he'll be helped out by Mark Garaway, who is our cricket Operations Director. We will use other coaches as and when we identify a need for them."
Our own Club Development Officer Albert van der Merwe has also been named in the squad. Good luck to them both. The squad in full is as follows: Jeremy Bray (Captain) (The Hills), Andy Balbirnie (Pembroke), Andy Britton (Fox Lodge), Jordan Coghlan (Clontarf) George Dockrell (Leinster), Chris Dougherty (Bready), Phil Eaglestone (Strabane), Shane Getkate (Malahide), James Hall (Waringstown), Nigel Jones (Civil Service North), Gary Kidd (Waringstown), Fintan McAllister (Malahide), Rory McCann (Instonians), Graham McDonnell (Pembroke), Niall Mc Donnell (Strabane), Andrew Poynter (Clontarf), Eddie Richardson (North County), James Shannon (Instonians), Reinhardt Strydom (YMCA), Albert van der Merwe (The Hills), Craig Young (Bready). |

Jim Bennett Receives ICC Global Award
Cricket Ireland has two reasons to celebrate following the announcement today of the global winners of the Pepsi ICC Development Programme annual awards.
Jim Bennett and Rob O’Connor are the two worthy recipients, winning their accolades for the Volunteer of the Year Award, and the Photo of the Year respectively.
Jim has been a tireless worker for Irish cricket at youth level, and has been a pivotal figure as Ireland’s under-age teams have dominated European cricket over the past decade. Players who have come through the much vaunted Irish youth system include Ed Joyce, Eoin Morgan, the O’Brien brothers, Boyd Rankin, Gary Wilson and current captain William Porterfield.
Cricket Ireland President Arthur Vincent paid tribute to both saying: “This is great news for Irish cricket and I’m delighted for both winners. Jim Bennett is a dedicated and tireless volunteer for Irish youth cricket, and it’s thanks to the likes of stalwarts like Jim why our youth system is the envy of many countries. He is quite simply a fantastic servant to the cause of cricket in the country and the award is richly deserved. Jim is a gentleman and a great ambassador for Irish cricket.” Well done Jim having already received the European Award to be recognised on this way is a great honour both for yourself and for our club. |

Thomas Mc Grane Tribute Night
The Hills hosted a special tribute to one of the great men of Leinster and Fingal cricket recently. They gathered in their droves from all across Leinster and Fingal in the clubhouse of The Hills Cricket Club in Skerries to pay tribute to Thomas Mc Grane for his incredible lifetime contribution to the game of cricket. The tributes were led on the night by Arthur Vincent, President of Cricket Ireland, who thanked Tom for his work not just in Fingal but also in Leinster. Arthur praised all the Fingal Clubs for their continued contribution to cricket in Ireland as well as the warmth of the welcome he had always received when visiting clubs in the area both as an official and a player. Matt Sheridan, President of The Leinster Cricket Union reminded the assembled audience that Tom was an honorary life member of the LCU in recognition of his contribution to that organisation. Siobhan McBennett representing the Leinster Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association thanked Tom for his great contribution to umpiring in Leinster. Seamus Clinton, President of The Fingal Cricket League, cited Tom’s work as one of the key reasons that cricket continues to flourish in Fingal today. The Presidents of the four clubs in Fingal namely; David O’Connor; North County, Ivan Harper; Balbriggan, Jim Bennett; The Hills and the incoming President from Rush Ann Harford presented Tom with a water colour of local interest specially commissioned for the occasion. Formalities concluded and it was down to tales of previous matches, personalities, runs hit, catches held and dropped, wickets taken and the odd questionable umpiring decision. Whatever the competitive banter amongst the four clubs present, they were all united on Friday night in paying tribute to one of the great men of cricket, Thomas Mc Grane. |

Naseer Shoukat joins The Hills Cricket Club for 2010 Season
Capped 11 times for Ireland in 2004 and 2005 Naseer Shoukat will be playing his cricket with The Hills Cricket Club for the 2010 season. Naseer has had a distinguished career with both Ireland and with Rush Cricket Club for the past 15 years. Commenting on the development Jim Bennett, President of The Hills said “with the new structure in place for the coming season we are delighted that a man with such a pedigree would be with The Hills for the challenging season ahead”. Naseer won the O’Grady Cup in Leinster for the 2009 season for his bowling taking 28 wickets and making just short of 500 runs with the bat.
The Leinster League is undergoing considerable structural change for 2010 with the old Senior 1, Section A-B, Senior 2, Senior 3 etc being replaced with Leagues Divisions numbered 1-13 with each league made up of 8 teams. The Hills have a team in both Division 1 and Division 2. “With 2 teams competing at this level, 2010 will represent a considerable step-up for many of our players and having Naseer on our team is a big bonus for us” commented Bennett.
Naseer is originally from Pakistan but has been resident in Fingal for more than 15 years. |

Concern Haiti Appeal Our fund raiser held in the clubhouse last Friday produced a wonderful result with the club depositing over €11,000 to date to the Concern Haiti appeal fund. The generous response from the members, supporters, parents and the business community enabled us to run the very successful auction and raffle. Everything from aromatherapy products to cricket bats, paintings, skips, fruit hampers, signed jerseys and special discount vouchers made sure that there was something for everyone. Jim Bennett did a great job as auctioneer, ably assisted by Sean Hoare and Malcolm Byrne. Local Concern man Donal Darcy gave us an insight into what it’s like on the ground in Haiti and what efforts are being put in place by the Concern team to alleviate the tragic circumstances of the people of Haiti. Martin Byrne entertained us during the auctioneering intervals. Well done to the organisers and a big thank you to all who contributed in so many ways. Your generosity continues in abundance. |

Jeremy Bray Retires from International Duties
Jeremy Bray has announced that he will retire from international cricket after playing 83 times for Ireland. Jeremy scored over 2,800 runs in his Irish career scoring seven centuries en route.
Explaining his decision, 36-year-old Bray said, “I’m not getting any younger, and it’s hard to get up to the levels of fitness now required for international cricket.
“The team has an incredibly demanding schedule over the next few years, and I couldn’t commit myself fully to that programme.” “I have had some wonderful memories and will always be grateful to Ireland for giving me the opportunity. I’d like to thank Adi Birrell for the faith he showed in me, and Phil Simmons for giving me the chance to make a comeback after being out of the side for two years. “The Irish fans are superb, and I’ll never forget the atmosphere of the World Cup in the West Indies.”
Jeremy made his Irish debut in 2002 and is in 9th position both in overall total runs and on averages.
Commenting in the development Martin Byrne, Chairman noted; “Jeremy has been a great contributor to the Irish cricket team since he made his debut in 2002, he has also been a great boost to The Hills. We wish Jeremy all our best wishes and thanks for his efforts and the great enjoyment he has provided us in the Irish shirt but we are also delighted that Jeremy will continue his playing career with The Hills for the 2010 season and hopefully many more to come”. |

Matt Dwyer Talks to Cover Point about the Ireland U19’s chances at the U19 ICC World Cup
CP: Hi Matt, pleased with the way the preparations have gone?
MD: The preparations have gone fairly well, though we are restricted to the weekends. We’ve had Trent, Alex Cusack, Whitey and Kyle involved so that’s been good. We have laid down fitness regimes and its gone well. To be honest though it is a disadvantage playing the tournament out of season. We’ve been restricted to indoor nets. It’s not ideal.
CP: What is the news about Graham McDonnell – already down in Sydney?
MD: Well he was carrying an injury when he went there but I believe he it is ok. The reports coming through from his coach down there at Mosman have been good.
CP: Have you a clear idea of what your starting XI is going to be for the World Cup opener against South Africa on Jan 15th?
MD: It would be wrong to say that I have pre-conceived ideas about the starting XI.
I guess as with most teams you have a core of about 8 players who could be fairly confident about their place. But because it’s being played out of season a lot will depend on how the guys are shaping up in training and in the warm-up games. There are plenty of places up for grabs.
By the time we are back, I think all the lads will have had a good opportunity to contribute.#
CP: How much will the conditions be a factor?
MD: Well there is a perception about New Zealand that it’s similar to Ireland but the more you look into it it’s not the case. For instance, the temperatures in Christchurch and Queenstown at the moment are between 25 and 30 degrees. I’d like someone to tell me in which corner of Ireland we get those temperatures! The heat will be a factor but we have a week in Sydney to get the body clocks right and to acclimatise so it shouldn’t be too bad. However, I don’t think we’ll be playing on green seaming wickets – I think it’ll be decent first-class pitches.
CP: What is your target for the tournament – to reach the Super 8s or to beat the USA and be competitive in the other matches?
MD: Listen, we’re not going there to be competitive. That’s a given. We qualified for it and when we pull on the green shirt we’re already competing. We’re going there to win. You can lose a match by 200 runs and turn around and win the next match. It’s not about being competitive. There’s no point in going unless we go there to win.
Our aim will be to topple one of the big guys in our first two matches (South Africa and Australia) and then beat the USA. The USA were the only side to beat us in Canada so we’ll be out to win that one. The tournament has three phases. The first is the warm-up, then the first three World Cup matches and then either the Super 8 or the Plate. Our immediate aim is to get as much as we can out of the four warm-up matches. Then our overall goal is to make the Super 8 stage. If we don’t make it then we’ll regroup and aim to win the Plate competition – that’s the second goal.

December 20th saw the Christmas Carols event at The Hills raise much needed funds for the local branch of The Society of St Vincent de Paul. Local soprano Noreen Molloy was joined my many local choristers and the boys and girls from Seaview Montessori to entertain the audience with seasonal music and song. Noreen Gavin provided all with accompaniment and she was joined by Martin Byrne and Michael Gavin adding some solo performances to compliment the evening. Entertainment was finished in time for the mulled wine and mince pies. The event raised over €700.00 for the local charity and a cheque was presented on the evening to members of the local chapter who were present. Thanks to everyone who attended and help raise the funds. |

December 19th saw the running of the produce and cake sale. The clubhouse was transformed into a mini market for the day with all classes of produce and confectionary for sale. Everything from locally produced cauliflower, potatoes, eggs, cabbage, carrots, herbs, and fruit of all varieties were complemented by cakes and confectionary of excellent home baked delicacies. A large crowd attended and made sure the event was a success raising substantial funds for the club. Many thanks to all the local producers for their incredible support and to those home bakers that toiled in their home kitchens. |

Event Alert-Poker Classic
Friday night next the 3rd of April we launch the first Poker Classic in the Club House at 8:30 pm. We are hoping that this will be the first of many such events which will help us raise much needed funds.
We need your help in several ways:
• Players who enjoy a good game of cards with great cash prizes. Player fee for the classic costs €25.
• Volunteers to help out with the running of the night and manning the bar
• People prepared to make some sandwiches for the night.
This is a very important fund raising event for the Club and I would ask you all to help out in any way that you can. Pass along this information to your friends and let Johnny Archer know of your availability and willingness to help out on the night. Johnny can be contacted on 086 1661262. Even if you don’t play poker it promises to be a great night. |
